New City is a hamlet located in the town of Clarkstown in Rockland County, New York. It is about 30 miles north of New York City. New City’s zip code is 10956.
New City is a large suburban community with residential areas consisting of diverse single family homes, large contemporary villas and mansions, and several apartment buildings and townhouses. Most of the residential streets of New City are surrounded by plenty of trees and foliage that offer quite and peaceful living. The hamlet is bound by beautiful landscape, with the mountains of High Tor State Park on the north and Lake Deforest (the largest lake in Rockland County) on the east. There is a large array of houses stretching for miles along Lake Deforest, with a beautiful and isolated environment that is considered prime real estate of Rockland County.
The main local road running through New City is Route 304, which has a significant business activity. The hamlet is amidst a well developed road network that easily connects it locations in all directions. New City has convenient access to the Palisades Interstate Parkway (Exit 11) which has only passenger cars and leads directly to Manhattan via the George Washington Bridge. Interstate 287 is just nearby and connects New City with upstate New York via Interstate 87, New Jersey via Garden State Parkway, and Westchester County via the Tappan Zee Bridge. Public Transportation in New City is provided by the buses of Mini Trans, which serve all of Clarkstown.
According to the United States Census Bureau, as of 2000 New City has a population of more than 34,000 residents. The hamlet has a total area of 16.3 square miles with 0.7 square miles of water. It is located at an elevation of over 150 feet above sea level.
The racial demographics of New City are 85.09% White, 4.67% African American, 0.08% Native American, 6.99% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.81% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race are 5.87% of the population.
New City has more than 5,900 households, many of which are wealthy. The median income for a household in the hamlet is $92,261, and the median income for a family is $99,761.
Main Street of New City forms the downtown area and is full diverse businesses and local municipal buildings. New City is the county seat of Rockland County and hosts the county courthouse and jail as well as the Clarkstown Police Department. In addition to several restaurants and shops, Main Street includes popular attractions of New City Cinema (movie theater) and New City Bowling & Batting Cages. Just off main street is Squadron Boulevard, which has a large bank office (Trust co.) that’s one of the tallest buildings in Rockland County.
New City is served by the excellent and acclaimed Clarkstown Central School District and is home to Laurel Plains Elementary School, Link Elementary School, Little Tor Elementary School, New City Elementary School, Woodglen Elementary School, and Clarkstown North High School. The Prime Time For Kids is a special private school for early child development and day care. The New City Library is another educational facility serving the local community.
New City is home to a large local Jewish Community and includes several centers to accommodate its local population such as the New City Jewish Center and Temple Beth Sholom. New City is also home to Reuben Gittelman Hebrew Day School, a private parochial Jewish School with strong religious and secular curriculums.
New City has plenty of parks and areas/facilities for recreation to accommodate people of all ages and interests. Zukor Park offers multiple ball fields, soccer/football fields, lighted basketball courts and trails, and also includes a community administration building. Kennedy Dells Park includes large open nature area with trails and wooded surroundings.
Dutch Gardens County Park & adjoining Demarest Kill Park are heavily wooded and includes trails, picnic area and a pond for fishing. Landau Memorial Park is another public park and includes gardens and walkways. Clarkstown North High School has excellent athletic fields, including tennis courts and indoor gymnasium which are all open for public use at specified hours.
New City is home to Dellwood Country Club, a private club that features a championship golf course, lighted har-tru tennis courts, a swimming pool, lots of open grass areas, and typical amenities such as pro shops, restaurant and a large clubhouse. Overlooking the club are the scenic mountains of the High Tor State Park. Dellwood Country Club hosts the annual Kennedy Funding Invitational tennis tournament, a fundraiser event that has attracted dozens of active top professionals and retired legends such as Pete Sampras and John McEnroe.
